Sonartransponder

Sonar transponder

In Germany approvals for offshore wind energy turbines and measurement masts usually include the installation and operation of a sonar transponder for the acoustic warning of submarines. The requirements which these identification beacons have to fulfill were determined by the German Federal Navy in cooperation with the Forschungsanstalt der Bundeswehr für Wasserschall und Geophysik (FWG) [Federal Army Research Institute for Water-borne Sound and Geophysics]. Hence THALES develop its WISO ST01in close cooperation with the German Federal Navy and the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) with regard to later use.

The THALES WISO ST01System is only activated in case of emergency by a sonar signal sent from a submarine and responds with a specified identifier. The response signal transmitted must on the one hand have a sufficiently high output level to achieve a secure signal-to-noise ratio at the submarine’s location even in unfavourable hydro-acoustic conditions such as impact bubbles with high waves. We on the other ensured in the development of THALES WISO ST01 that environmental compatibility regarding marine mammals in the immediate vicinity and far away is guaranteed.
