Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: 60% regenerative power

06.01.2010 / In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern about 60 percent of regional power requirements can be generated from regenerative energy sources this year. Vice President of the German WindEnergy Association, Andreas Jesse, told the news agency ddp that about two thirds of this is accounted for by the use of wind energy.

In north-eastern Germany there are in the meantime 1,295 wind power plants with a capacity of 1,442 megawatts on the grid. Although, Jesse said, 2009 was the worst year for wind since 2004. In the last year alone 49 new plants were erected with an installed capacity of 95 megawatts, almost twice as many as in the previous year.

"If the planned new suitable areas in our state were processed quickly, investment of over 1.5 billion Euros would be possible in the wind power sector in the next two years,” emphasised Jesse. This would be tantamount to an economic stimulus package, for the benefit of future generations as well. To implement this environmental protection project it would however now urgently require the personnel support of the regional planning authorities.

Experts point out that municipalities are also increasingly profiting from the use of wind power. For example about 5,000 Euros in business tax payments would be due annually per megawatt of installed capacity. All municipalities together could thus count on over 7.2 million Euros business tax contribution per year.

The North East has also shown a significant growth in the sector of photovoltaics in 2009. With the installation of 778 new plants the total capacity has increased in the meantime to over 82 megawatts. “With this we can produce more than one percent of the regional power requirements with solar power. However the regional government’s less ambitious concept »Energieland 2020« in the sector of regenerative energies only plans development of 150 megawatts total capacity by 2020,” criticised Jesse. “We will almost certainly have already met this target in two years time.” In fact it is estimated that over 500 megawatt photovoltaic plants should be on the grid by 2020. The operation of existing biogas plants with a total capacity of over 200 megawatts is already enough to cover a fifth of the power requirements in the North East, said Jesse.
